Teething Drooling Toddler: meet Sophie the Giraffe, your gum’s new best friend

My wife found Sophie the Giraffe Teether through word of mouth. This was before is was readily available on amazon and pretty much everywhere. With all the warnings and lectures about pregnancy and breastfeeding and potty training somehow teething does not get it proper due. But if you kid has teething pains this is a real issue with difficulty sleeping, drooling, putting everything in the mouth, etc, etc. It can also last for months at a time. Of course, not all kids hurt at the same level – some kids don’t really hurt all that much. But most do have sensitive gums and the biting on something hard (but not too hard it hurts the gums) provides some relief.

Boiron – Cocyntal for Colic Symptom Relief

Like Camilia from the same manufacturer, this homeopathic medicine is a life saver. It is a great alternative to modern medicines and we find it to be quite effective. According to the Boiron Website this medicine contains 3 active ingredients: Carbo vegetabilis (Vegetable Charcoal), Colocynthis (bitter apple, bitter cucumber, egusi, or vine of Sodom), and Cuprum metallicum (Copper). These are supposed to help with colic associated with bloating, cramping pains and abdominal cramps respectively. The medicine comes in small single dose plastic tubes (or capsules) which make it very easy to use in the middle of the night. You simply twist the cap off and squeeze the entire content into your baby’s mouth.

Our little one used to have colic pains since the time she was born. Usually during the evening and into the night she would be fussy, crying and unable to sleep. We were somewhat lucky as some babies have it much worse than she did. However it was severe enough that we were told to give her acid reflux medications. It is important to consider homeopathic medicine as real medicine with possible side-effects and risks. However, compared to an anti acid medication we felt that it was a preferred alternative. This is a judgment call you will need to make as a parent and you should definitely consult with your baby’s doctor before deciding on a course of action. There are obvious risks in not properly addressing severe reflux problems and this medicine is not the answer for all problems.

For our baby we found it to be effective in releaving her tummy pains and allowing her to sleep. Usually, by the time we gave her the Cocyntal she was so tired that the relief allowed her to fall asleep pretty quickly. Accroding to Boiron you can give your baby up to 3 doses - spacing them 15 minutes apart. We found that usually one dose did the trick and on rare occasions we needed a second dose. Again, your  baby may react differently to this medication and you should observe her carefully – especially when administering for the first time.
